Concrete 2019

The concrete work, which I produced in 2019, consists out of two components: the mixed media concrete sculpture and the hyperrealistic ballpoint pen drawing. My art often revolved around layers, hidden things, and multi textuality. The experimentation with different mediums is very crucial to me as it is always a new experience and a challenge to combine uncommon materials. In the case of the concrete work: concrete, wool, wax, and unmelted splintered glass wax. Mixing such a durable material like concrete with organic 'rotting' and 'unstable' materials such as wool and wax made the sculpture itself unstable. The juxtaposition of the materials was a key component for me.

Here is where the drawing becomes important. The combination of 3D and 2D work is the other key component to my pieces. While I sometimes decide to display the physical object, sometimes I will not do it and let the audience guess if the drawn part is depicting a real object or not. In this case, I displayed it because the sculpture started decaying the second it was out of the mold. The drawing depicts the sculpture in its "newborn state" however, on the exhibition's open day, the piece already changed and started crumbling around its display. The object crumbled but, the drawing has the potential to exits forever.
